About the Item
A rare and highly expressive 19th-century carousel pig attributed to French master carver Gustave Bayol, circa 1900. Crafted from American heart pine, this figure captures Bayol’s signature style—anatomically dynamic, playfully theatrical, and richly detailed. The pig’s animated posture, floral rosettes, and tongue-out expression evoke the joy and spectacle of Belle Époque carousel traditions.
What sets this example apart is its remarkably weathered surface, worn to a soft, driftwood-like finish through decades of exposure and use. With only faint traces of original paint remaining, the surface now reveals the natural grain and texture of the wood, enhanced by stable age cracks and a patina rich with character. The overall effect is raw, sculptural, and emotionally resonant—far more compelling than heavily restored counterparts.
The figure is mounted on a custom walnut base in the style of George Nakashima, supported by a substantial thick red brass post. Designed as a decorative object rather than a functional ride, the pig is intended for display only. Minor age-related surface losses and a later replacement tail are consistent with its age. The body of the pig measures approximately 11 inches across, offering a compact yet commanding presence.
From the estate of American folk artist P. Buckley Moss, this piece bridges 19th-century French craftsmanship with 20th-century American artistic legacy—an evocative blend of fine art, folk history, and timeless charm.
