Original Wood Carved Letterpress Carnival Midway Scene Carousel Ferris Wheel

About

Large hand-carved carnival scene letterpress wood block. Made by the Neal Walters poster company in Arkansas in 1937. Great depiction of a carnival midway including a carousel with horses and swans, an aeroplane ride, a ferris wheel, ticket booths, clowns with balloons, circus tents, and many people in period dress. The flash from the camera overexposed how this looks in person. The color is much more even. The blue color is from the ink that was used during the printing process. This letterpress was part of a series of three letterpress that were used to print a three color poster. This is the primary plate. We also had the secondary (red) and tertiary (yellow) plates. The red plate is dated 1937 and has the initials of the carver. This really is an impressive piece of art. When correctly lit, the carved image really jumps out. Letterpress carvings were typically destroyed by printing companies as they did not want their images copied. These are quite unusual and not commonly found. Reverse images show notes and directions for printing.
