Mochaware Mug Made by J.& R Clews at the Cobridge Factory, England, circa 1820

About

Why We Love It: The design is hypnotic. A Mochaware mug made by J.& R Clews at the Cobridge Factory, England, circa 1820. The design is achieved by the use of a crown cam to create irregular patterns like the black and white pattern seen on this mug. This mug is a rare existing example of the use of the crown cam. Jonathan Rickard notes that pots with this type of decoration "seem far more modern in design than those using any other type of decoration". See "Moca and related dipped wares, 1770-1939" pg 36 fig 46 for an image of this mug, and a detailed description of the process of making crown Cam Mochaware. Rickard describes this mug as having glaze-enhanced green reeding, (light brown) slip banding, and inlaid crown-cam engine turning. He notes that the design relates to sherds found at the Cobridge factory of James and Ralph Clews (1818-1834), circa 1820. Dimensions: 3.5" tall x 2.75" diameter at the base Condition: The condition appears excellent, but there is invisible restoration Price: $1800.
