About the Item

A fantastic, quite rare early tea/coffee set by American master potter Peter Voulkos who is known for his abstract Expressionist ceramic pottery pieces and sculptures. A very atypical piece. So finely thrown. The craftsmanship and design are exquisite. Signed on the bases of the pot and cups by Voulkos with his incised signature. A very unique and scarce set. Would be a great addition to any collectors of Voulkos' work or Mid-Century Modern pottery or eye-catching set in about any setting. Voulkos is widely considered to be the most important and impactful ceramist of the modern era. He won the Rodin Museum Prize at the first Paris Biennale in 1959 and was the winner of a Guggenheim fellowship in 1984. Voulkos received the College Art Association’s Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1997. He was made an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 2001. He also received six honorary doctorate degrees as well as three National Endowment for the Arts awards. In very good to excellent vintage condition with one very small firing crack at the base/underside of the pot - clearly in the making - else no discernable flaws, cracks, chips, etc... (please see photos). Beautiful, engaging, and pristine overall.
