About the Item
A wonderfully made and colored ashtray/ bowl by Mexican born ceramic master Raul Coronel who played an important role in the American (he became a naturalized citizen) / California design movement of the 1950s-1970s alongside Peter Voulkos, Beatrice Wood, Gertrud & Otto Natzler, Otto & Vivika Heino, to name but a few.
This ashtray features a wonderful glaze featuring shades of olive green, ochre, and rust.
The work is signed by Coronel on the base.
Coronel's work showed in the Pasadena Museum's influential "California Design" exhibits and can be found in such museums as The DeYoung Museum in San Francisco, Los Angeles County Museum, The Long Beach Museum, The Tweed Museum of Art, The Arts of Southern California Museum, and The Smithsonian Institute to name a few.
