Talavera Ceramic Plate, Don Quixote and the Magic Horse Clavileño, Signed, 1950s

About the Item

Fantastic Talavera ceramic dish painted by hand by S. Timoneda representing the wonderful scene of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza blindfolded on the back of the magic horse from Clavilé. In "Don Quixote de la Mancha", the Clavileño horse appears in chapter XXI of the second part. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza meet at an inn and are presented with an opportunity to ride a magical horse called Clavileño, which supposedly can fly. Despite Sancho's doubts, Don Quixote convinces his squire to join the adventure. When riding the horse, the characters begin to spin in circles and rise into the air. At that moment, Don Quixote begins to hallucinate about an epic battle that he must fight in the air, while Sancho tries to hold on to the horse. Finally, the horse falls to the ground and Don Quixote and Sancho return to reality, realizing that it was all an illusion. Although the adventure of the Clavileño horse is brief, it is one of the most iconic scenes in Cervantes's work.

The edges almost resemble a starburst in how they extend from the center of the plate. The blue around the edges is a pearlized blue color, and alternates between scallops between the pearlized blue and gold. The technique in which the blue and gold has been applied shows slight brush strokes. A lovely detail that makes this piece unique. Inside at the center of the plate, scenes of Oregon are artfully applied. Such as Mt. Thielsen & Diamond Lake, Multnomah Falls...
