Tonala Pottery Birds Owls Toucan Dove Hand Painted Made in Mexico Set of 4

About the Item

Instant collection of four hand painted midcentury vintage Tonala pottery birds. Two green owls, one blue toucan, and one russet dove. They are all marked in some way, and all are in wonderful vintage condition. The large owl when tapped sounds like there may be a crack but I have not seen it. There are a couple little nicks and dings but nothing else outstanding. Please see photos, circa 1950s. We are loving these quirky little guys here at the shop. Four various sized Tonala Mexican pottery birds with matte finish. They are each a lovely hand painted piece of Folk Art. One large green owl. One small green owl. One lovely blue toucan. And one russet dove. Each is adorned with varying designs in colors of blue, brown, and black with touches red, and yellow. The large owl is marked Tonala, Jal.; the small owl is marked Mexico; the dove has a sticker I cannot read; and the toucan is marked Tonala, Jal. as well as having a sticker that reads: TAXCO, Plateria Y Joyeria, A Flores Y De Mayo, Mazatlan, Mexico. Tonala is one of the major ceramic centers in Jalisco, Mexico. They are internationally recognized for their techniques and decorative styles and most importantly with these high fire ceramics. The clay found there is so Fine that the works made with it are like porcelain. These adorable birds are but one of the types of animals you can find which are made using a molding process. This type of pottery pre-dates the Hispanic period. These four vintage guys make such an attractive yet fun little vignette. You need to make them yours. Sizes: ? Large owl 9 H x 7 D x 4.5 W inches ?
