Living Section' Mirror by Cometabolism Studio

About the Item

The work exploits a section of the living areas of the circular space station mentioned in a 1952 Collier's magazine as inspiration, implanting the grand spaceship form into the space of everyday life, enabling the originally grand and contained living area form to be contained by the living area. This reversal coincides with the contrast between seriousness and entertainment, grandness and smallness in our lives today. We build the grand in the gradually virtual everyday and find the real life in the fantasy of grandness. About the Artist: Cometabolism Studio is a design studio based in Shanghai, founded by Zhang Ning and Yang Yafei. Zhang Ning graduated from the designer maker program at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London. The direction of her work explores the entangled relationship between objects and human behavior. Yang Yafei graduated from the Department of Oil Painting of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and Furniture Design at Central Academy of Fine Arts China. His works often use industrial readymades to blur the definition of objects and play with the idea of power of public space, attempting to derive industrial production relations through ready-made industrial components. The duo have collaborated on several art and design projects as long-time friends and expect to rethink the creative process under the ruins of the post-industrial heritage. In 2020, they established Cometabolism Studio to explore the possibility of reactivating mass-produced industrial metabolites such as industrial components and blurring their function in space, allowing art to intervene in everyday space. At the same time, through digital generation and other technologies, they explore undefined art objects that can blur the border between the real and the virtual.
