19th Century Sugar Tongs

About

Tongs were used to split and cut sugar. Sugar bread was invented by the Venetians around the 14th century. Sugar tongs started to be created around that time as sugar was sold to the weight, shaped as a conical bread of 1 to 3 kg, wrapped in newspaper. It had to be crushed with a peak, a hammer or pliers to be served in smaller quantities. Pliers have a similar shape as a pair of scissors, with the difference that the tip is made of two thin choppers.
