About the Item
ANTIQUE NATIVE AMERICAN/CANADIAN FIRST NATION CUSHION/PILLOW
A pine sawdust-stuffed cushion with intricate and highly decorative glass beadwork on a green velvet ground, inscribed ‘Montreal’ and dated ‘1914’.
This shape is sometimes known as a heart shape, but known by others as an arrowhead.
Probably made by the Mohawk tribe near Montreal and bought either as a souvenir by a visitor or possibly as a love token. Canada did WWI in 1914, so there could have perhaps been a connection there, too.
Iroquois beadwork originates from the Northeastern states of the US, as well as over the border into Canada. Beadwork was always used by tribes in this area, but when European settlers introduced glass beads, they seemed to have a special sparkle to them. The people believed them to have a spiritual or supernatural aura, and they became highly valuable and thus were sewn onto their objects. By the 18th century, they began applying them to wares to sell.
