About the Item

From Native America's Northwest Columbia River area comes this substantial and unique ancient hand carved basalt stone ceremonial bowl or mortar possessing nine (9) human like heads within a circular double band, Columbia River. It comes from a private Colorado collection. The stone hand carved from a large basalt river pebble, with multiple effigies possibly human or seal faces - a popular ancient Columbia river icon, dates pre contact to 1500 AD or older. The effigy carved from a heavy boulder in the round with substantial patina and surface encrustation appropriate to its great age. An old collection label is visible near its pointed base. Please view the important book on Columbia River art : "People of the River, Native Arts Of the Oregon Territory." Provenance: old Colorado collection Dimensions: 15.5 inches high and 9.5 inches at its thickest mid section, heavy Nine (9) heads are carved between a linear double band. The tapered base carved to insert into the ground. All native American pre contact stone effigy carvings are scarce and this one with multiple faces is exceptionally rare.
