About the Item

This rare and authentic pair of antique Sioux moccasins dates to the 1870s, during the late Classic Period of Native American artistry (circa 1650–1875). Handcrafted by a skilled Plains Indian artisan of the Sioux Nation—encompassing the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota peoples—these moccasins exemplify traditional materials, masterful craftsmanship, and vibrant decorative artistry. Made from soft, native-tanned buckskin (deer hide), the moccasins feature striking porcupine quillwork bands dyed in vivid orange-red, blue, and yellow hues. The soles are hand-beaded with early glass trade beads in blue, white, green, and white-heart red, adding rich texture and color contrast. Red trade cloth trims the openings, while sturdy rawhide soles ensure durability. Each moccasin measures approximately 11.75 inches long by 4.25 inches wide and 4.5 inches high, reflecting authentic 19th-century Plains Indian footwear design. The Sioux Nation historically inhabited the Great Plains region—including North and South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Montana, and southern Canada. These moccasins are prized for their cultural significance, exquisite quillwork and beadwork, and use of traditional and trade materials. In excellent condition for their age, this pair is a remarkable example of Native American wearable art and Plains Indian heritage. We have specialized in authentic Native American antiques since 1979, with full authenticity guaranteed.
