Signed Soapstone Carving of an Inuit by Quanaq Mikkigak

About the Item

An Inuit carving of a man signed on the base. Great Color. It appears to be a soapstone carving. Great color and striations. The man is approx 4.5 inches tall and approx 1x2.5 inches in dimension. It is signed on the base. Age appropriate wear with some nicks and surface scratches. A brief bio of the artist: Qaunaq (Haunak) Mikkigak Inuit Cape Dorset, Nunavut Territory, Canada (1932- ) A daughter of graphic artist Mary Kudjuakjuk, Qaunaq grew up traditionally on the land and began to make small carvings after her father’s death when she was still a girl. She married Oqutaq Mikkigak; they were encouraged by James and Alma Houston to make carvings. Qaunaq made some drawings in 1960 and in the late 1970s but preferred carving. As both Qaunaq and her husband had wage employment, she made carvings because she wanted to, not because she had to, and perhaps because of this, her work has a certain charm. Excerpt from Cape Dorset Sculpture, 2005.
