English 19th century burl walnut writing box of unusual interior conformation. The exterior of the box is inlaid with a transitional English ship, having both sail and steam capabilities , sailing on the open seas. She is made of ebony, boxwood and sails on a sycamore sea. The front panel is inlaid in perspective cube made of boxwood, satinwood, sycamore and ebony enclosed with delicate stringing. the end panels are of lively walnut and the back panel is in flame mahogany; all are enclosed by delicate stringing.. The interior has a mahogany writing panel which hinges down to write upon; the interior of that space retains its original red paper lining. The space in the bottom of the box has wells for oddments and ink; two of the compartments have bottoms which slide to the center and reveal hidden spaces beneath them. British Sailor's Woolwork or Woolie of the Named Barque "Polly"

Large British Sailor's Woolwork of the Barque Polly, Named "Polly", Circa 1885-95 A large sailor's woolie or woolwork of a port side view of a ship named "Polly" under full sail. The ship is rigged as a barque. The name "Polly" can be seen on a banner flying from the mainmast and on the front of the bow and the shiop was named after the owner's wife Marian Poyy Woodside. (see below). The sails are trapunto, creating a three-dimensional look of the sails full of wind. The sea is depicted is rippling bands of green and white. Dimensions: Frame: 26 1/4 inches high x 31 inches wide x 2 inches Reference: The ship was built in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1885, and launched by Marian "Polly" Woodside, the wife of the owner, tossing flowers across the bow. (Champagne being too precious). The ship made several voyages primarily between South America and the UK before being repositioned in the Pacific. A barque has three or four masts. The fore and mainmast are square-rigged, and the mizzen fore-and-aft, usually gaff-rigged. Carries a mainsail on each mast, but the mainsail shape differs per mast (square or gaff). Barques were built with up to five masts. Four-masted barques were quite common. Barques were a good alternative to full-rigged ships because they require a lot fewer sailors. But they were also slower. Very popular rig for ocean crossings, so a great rig for merchants who travel long distances and don't want 30 - 50 sailors to run their ship. Fine 19th century trinity house marquetry inlaid rosewood sewing box, circa 1870, made by a Trinity House Lighthouse Keeper or sailor aboard a Lightship for sale to passing ships. The rosewood box features marquetry inlaid cutter-rigged sloops sailing past a lighthouse within a crossbanded reserve on the lid, and additional inlaid cutters and escutcheon on the front. The interior is fitted with a velvet pincushion and various cuddies both open or covered by a rosewood lid with petite ivory finial; the tray lifts out to reveal a paper-lined storage compartment. The bottom of the box retains its original paper covering. Delicate marquetry inlay does not survive well in the damp environments of lighthouses and ships, so these highly prized Trinity House boxes...
