American Sailor's Wool Work Depicting Ten Naval Vessels, 1865-1870

$14,000

About

American Sailor's wool work depicting ten naval vessels, 1865-1870   A remarkable large American sailor's wool work or woolier depicting ten different American ships including two monitors probably in New England. The scene depicted centers on an American ship (possibly the US Wisconsin) with guns visible in the gun ports, steaming away from a coastline guarded by an American fort or gun battery flying the stars and stripe and with two red-bricked houses near the rocky shore, also with a lighthouse further down the shoreline. To the right, two small vessels are sailing out to sea, while in the right background a large three-masted ship under sail is coming in. Further along the coast, the stern of another navy ship can be seen as it sails up the coast. Finally, behind the large central ship, four small boats and vessels can be seen through the rigging. In the foreground are two US Navy Monitors. The central ship, probably the US Wisconsin, flies the stars and stripes from the mizzenmast and from the stern- a Navy Jack.  She has three masts and from the foremast flies a blue ensign with a band of red, white, and red.  From the top of the mizzenmast is another flag with a light blue ground with wide red bands and white stars on the blue ground.  The ship has steam issuing from the two funnels as she stems out to sea. Finally, in the background on the horizon is a star-shape with eight rays depicting the rising or setting sun. Dimensions: 26 inches high x 31 1/4 inches wide x 1 inch deep Provenance: Grace Allen collection.
