British Sailor's Woolwork with Four Ships Sailing Under Star Light
About the Item
British Sailor's Woolwork with Four Ships Sailing Under Star Light,
Circa 1860-75
The unusual large British sailor's woolie depicts a scene from the Crimea War period under star light. A large fort can be seen on the left with a tower showing above the parapet fortifications. In the background are two British ships sailing away out to sea while in the foreground are another two sailing in the opposite direction. A full moon can be seen on the horizon and multiple stars fill the sky.
It is rare to see a night scene particularly with some many stars- a sight that was so striking to the humble sailor who created this piece.
