About the Item

British Sailor's Woolwork of Royal Navy Ship in Bay, Circa 1860-75 This meticulously crafted sailor's woolwork, often called a "woolie," is rendered in Berlin wool and portrays a Royal Navy Second-Rate Battleship under steam power. The vessel proudly flies the White Ensign as it navigates a calm, blue bay. In the foreground, a smaller sailing ship glides by under sail. The lower section of the woolwork depicts a charming shoreline scene, featuring a red-roofed cottage with a path winding alongside it. The battleship exhibits remarkable detail, with cotton rigging and glass beads representing its portholes. A whimsical touch is added by smoke gracefully rising from the cottage's chimney. Interestingly, while this style of woolie commonly commemorates a sailor's return or farewell, this particular piece is notable for the absence of human figures making for a well balanced composition. Dimensions: 15 3/4 inches high x 19 3/4 inches wide. The woolie has Museum UV glass to protect the wool from light and significantly. reduce reflection. (Ref: NY10833-irkp)
