About the Item

This superb folk art diorama ship in a bottle has been wonderfully modelled and constructed in a very large Bells whiskey bottle. The type of bottle used for display in a pub or inn. The main vessel is the Australian four mast iron ship, the SV Port Jackson, built circa 1890. This model ship is extraordinary in its modelling and detail. It is shown in full sail with accurate rigging and a finely detailed deck. The ship is surging through the water chasing after a smaller sailboat boat which is built into the neck of this large bottle. The diorama has a distance cost line and a small island, which from research seems to resemble a view of the entrance to the Australian Port Jackson, New South Wales. The ship, sea and landscape are all beautifully hand pained – a real work of art. The diorama comes with a hardwood stand custom made for displaying the bottle together with a Bakelite type plaque engraved with SV Port Jackson, circa 1890. This fine, very large example is in very good original condition. English or possibly Australian, circa 1920-30. Height of bottle 14cm x width 51cm x depth 14cm Height including stand 20cm

A rare 19th century folk art diorama of two sailing vessels racing at sea.
Located in Central England, GB
This most attractive mid 19th century folk art cased diorama shows a view at sea with a large three mast English ship being chased in a racing situation by a smaller and faster single mast yacht. Both are passing by a lighthouse which is in the foreground. This diorama has been beautifully handmade. The vessel, sails and lighthouse are all hand carved in wood and very nicely painted in bright colours as is the setting of the choppy sea which has most likely been formed in papier mâché. The most appealing element of this piece is its small compact size which easily lends itself for display on a shelf, table or perhaps wall mounted. The case is made from nailed pine boards which have been papered and painted black and finished with a glazed front set into putty. The glass is original and period with lovely handmade imperfections. This decorative diorama is in excellent original condition. English, circa 1860 Height 16cm x width 52.5cm x depth 8.5cm max. Thank you for looking at this rare and interesting 19th century diorama...
