Edwardian Shell Valentine- Anchor-shaped Diorama-Ships off Coast
A large Edwardian shellwork diorama with bevelled glass in the form of an anchor. The diorama features a chromolithograph of ships off the coast of Dover with the iconic white cliffs behind. Surrounding the image on the exterior is a display of sea shells and on the bottom of the interior are sea shells, seaweed and coral.
Dimensions: 10 3/4 inches high x 8 1/4 inches wide.
These shellwork dioramas were produced in the late Victorian/early Edwardian period as souvenirs of coastal towns and seaside locations, often bought by sailors to take home as presents for their sweethearts.
