Edwardian Shellwork Valentine Diorama,
Circa 1900.
A large circular Edwardian star-shape shellwork diorama with beveled glass, features a chromolithograph of a sailing ship passing a lighthouse. Surrounding the image on the exterior is a display of sea shells while on the inside at the bottom of the image is a collection of sea shellls, seaweed and coral.
Dimensions: 13 inches high x 11 1/3 inches wide (33 x 29 cm).
These shellwork dioramas were produced in the late Victorian/early Edwardian period as souvenirs of coastal towns and seaside locations, often bought by sailors to take home as presents for their sweethearts.
