An interesting and decorative Sailor's Valentine shell picture of doves and a heart, c.1880. Set in a later shell frame.
Sailors' valentines were a shell art form developed in the early nineteenth century.
They were usually assembled by female residents of Barbados and other Caribbean island for sailors to purchase and bring back as souvenirs.
