About the Item

Sailor's Woolwork of HMS Reindeer of a Large Size, Made by Henry Payn Hopper, Circa 1865-70 The large woolie depicts a starboard side view of the HMS Reindeer under steam and sail. She sails on a wavy sea with a banner below in red with yellow lettering with the name HMS Reindeer. Dimensions: Frame size is 38 1/4 inches wide x 28 inches high; Sight: 17 1/2 inches high x 25 inches wide. The wool comes with a typewritten note reading, "This excellent wool-on-canvas picture of H.M.S. Reindeer was worked by a member of her crew. He was Henry Payn Hopper, a seaman whose Part of the Ship was Captain of the Maintop. He was a Margate man, who joined the Royal Navy in 1859 and served in this particular man-of-war from 1867-1871. On leaving the R.N., Henry Hopper was for many years a constable with the Margate Polive Force and resided in Zion Place." HMS Reindeer was a Royal Navy wooden-hulled screw-driven sloop of the Camelion class, in service from 1866 to 1876. In 1868 she claimed Caroline Island for the British Crown. The Camelion class was a class of screw-driven sloops of wood construction, designed by Isaac Watts and operated by the Royal Navy. Eight ships of the class were built from 1858 to 1866 with another eight cancelled. They were initially rated as second-class sloops, but were later reclassified as corvettes. Design The class was designed by Issac Watts as second-class sloops of 17 guns, and were a lengthened version of the Cruizer class. Construction Built of a traditional wood structure, they were 185 feet (56 m) long at the gundeck, 33 feet (10 m) in beam and displaced 1,365 tons. A barque rig was fitted to allow easy sail handling with a relatively small crew of 180.[1] Propulsion They were fitted with a two-cylinder horizontal single-expansion steam engine (although Perseus and Reindeer received single trunk steam engines) driving a single screw. These engines generated 200 nominal horsepower, giving a speed of approximately 9 knots (17 km/h; 10 mph). Armament They were armed with five 40-pounder breech-loading guns and twelve 32-pounder muzzle-loading smoothbore guns, although Reindeer was completed with a single 110-pounder and five 64-pounder guns.
