About the Item

Blackfeet style lance with feathers, hereford tail, medicine pouch, red strough and sheared otter. 6'2" Amongst the Blackfeet, specific military society members were known as "Lance Owners" and were charged with maintaining the integrity of their group. Their lances were wrapped with otter hide and red trade cloth strips indicating two things. The sheared otter strip represented capability like the otter and the red trade cloth strip represented commitment and spirituality. A single scalp lock was an awarded badge of office earned by the owner showing bravery and success in battle. The Thunder Being is honored on these lances with attached one or more eagle feathers. The green trade cloth wrapping at the hold shows integration with Mother Earth.
