Antique 19th Century Dowry or Wedding Armoire w/ Maroon Paint & Floral Bouquets

$4,950

About

A beautiful wedding armoire featuring painted urns with floral bouquets on the red panels of the doors, with swags of flowers along the frieze and waist that are all stylized representations typical of folk art. Armoire has a painted maroon-color background with black columns and painted black and red details along the fluted sides, crown and base moldings. It has the original embossed brass key plates and rests on original square feet. Interior offers a vertical divider with three fixed shelves on the right and a hanging rod on the left, Austria, circa 1820. Since a dowry armoire like this would have been passed down from mother to daughter, the date of 1893 does not reflect the original age of the piece but is likely several generations removed. At that time, there may have been some additions to the decorative painting, but the painting does date to the 19th century. Dowry furniture traditionally held the bride's trousseau: handwoven textiles that young girls labored over that included their wedding gown & shawl in the hope of marriage. They are also called "hope chests". Measurements: 54" wide x 20" deep x 71" high (Inside depth: 17 1/4", width at waist 48", depth at crown 21 1/2").
