1927 Cat Japanese folk Ema Shrine votive wooden tablet

About the Item

EMA OF CAT – Anonymous Japanese Shinto folk art piece of votive wooden tablet offered for the shrine so-called ‘Ema’ (lit. ‘Horse picture’) with such a lovely cat drawn by its worshipper him/herself, with handwritten note at the backside suggesting its info as dedicated to Osaki Hachimangu shrine in Sendai, Miyagi prefecture, December 24th, Showa 2nd (1927). This shrine is well known for its architectural wooden sculpture of ‘Nirami neko’ (lit. ‘Cat with glaring eyes’). 19.8 x 13.4 x 0.8cm (7.79 x 5.27 x 0.31in). Upper part is split and missing as is.
