About the Item
Beautiful Swedish Folk Art (commonly known in swedish as bonad) made 1790-1820s. Part of a bigger painting. Likely made by Johannes Nilsson at Sunnerboskolan, Småland. Local painters were often inspired by decorations in churches, where they learned and trained their crafts. The painting on linen is upholstered as a pillow.
The main motif depicts a holy woman serving wine dressed in early 18th century Swedish apparel in a muted palette on homespun linen. Over her head a typical red Christmas flower is shown. These festive decorations were displayed in Swedish homes during Christmas and are rarely found outside the country. The text Lagar mad, translates to ”Cooking”. In the left corner a man is patiently smoking pipe and waiting for food.
