Bram Bogart, Painting, Signed on the Back, circa 1970, Belgium

About the Item

Bram Bogart, Painting, Signed on the Back, circa 1970, Belgium. Height 55 cm, width 76 cm. Bram Bogart (July 12, 1921 – May 2, 2012) was a Belgian Expressionist painter closely associated with the COBRA group. After his studies, Bogart worked in advertising in Rotterdam. After the Second World War, he moved to Paris at the age of twenty-five and was one of the founders of Art Informel. He experimented with cubism and figurative drawing, painting flowers, still lifes and self-portraits. In the 1950s he began to work with impasto, developing an expressionist style that became increasingly abstract over time, consisting of thick layers of boldly applied and colored paint. In 1961, he settled permanently in Belgium with his future wife Leni and became a Belgian citizen in 1969. It was there that he began to experiment with a more three-dimensional medium, a mixture of mortar, siccative, powdered chalk, of varnish and raw pigment, applied to large and heavy wooden support structures.
