About the Item

This is an original and historic 19.5 inch by 12 inch hand incised work of art on board of a striking portrait of George B. McClellan Army Major General, Boston Jan 22, 1862 It is signed and dated on back with an extensive description. This unique work of art is incised in great detail using pyrographic (wood burning) techniques and with images of a civil war army scene. It is signed obverse BH (Ball Hughes) and then extensively on reverse: "This Sketch of Major General McClellan of the U.S. Army was burnt with a Poker from an approved Photograph expressly for S.D. Nickerson, Esq. Ball Hughes Fecit, Boston, Jan 22, 1862 The simple wood frame appears to be original including a descriptive brass plaque at bottom of portrait- just the way we love to find them. Dimensions: Frame 21.75 inches high and 14 inches wide Site 19.5 inches high and 12 inches wide Hand burned and hand stained using pyrographic techniques by one of America's great master 19th century pyrographic artisans Provenance: Old New England collection. History of the Pyrography: py·rog·ra·phy noun is the art or technique of decorating wood or leather by burning a design on the surface with a heated metallic point. Pyrography was particular popular during the last quarter of the 19th century and first quarter of the 20th century About Ball Hughes: The artist Robert Ball Hughes was the renowned sculptor who did the Alexander Hamilton statue that was burned in the fire of 1835 (for which models remain in the Metropolitan Museum of New York). He was also renowned as the miniaturist engraver who modified the Gobrecht design of Lady Liberty that appeared on many U.S. minted coins from 1840 on. In an 1891 column in The New England Magazine entitled, "The Old Masters of Boston," Samuel L Gerry wrote the following words of praise about the artist: And now flits across the memory a brilliant sculptor, whose familiar face and tall figure were well known in our streets. Ball Hughes was without controversy a genius, as is evidenced by his well-known group of the Widow Wadman and Uncle Toby, and the fine statue of Bowditch, both I think in the Art Museum. He was cut down in the prime of life, yet not by the hand of death. Many knew him in his later years by his poker drawings, which he did for small returns. It was like "a giant cracking nuts." We have never had in Boston natural powers for art superior to his. In all his obliquities he was a gentleman. In his later years he produced a small volume of hand engraved, burnt wood poker art pictures of famous personalities from photographs and by commission.
