About the Item

A large and incredibly well executed acrylic painting on panel by California artist Jerry Van Megert promoting a circa 1960 Bohemian Club stage production of “Twelve Angry Men”, the 1954 courtroom drama teleplay by Reginald Rose that was adapted for film to great acclaim by Sidney Lumet in 1957. Skillful composition, with commanding title above very evocative sepia tone portraits of twelve stern jurors and a stoic young defendant who’s portentously framed by a large hangman’s noose. Tiny dabs of glossy white paint in select spots catch the light and add a subtle touch of visual dynamism. Dates from very early in the career of acclaimed portrait and landscape artist Jerry Van Megert (b. 1938), a decades-long member of the Bohemian Club who’s lived and worked in Pebble Beach, California, for the past fifty years. We were very fortunate to have recently had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Van Megert about this particular piece, and he explained to us that the jurors’ portraits were based on personal friends and memories. He painted many portraits of club members over the years, and created the artwork for numerous other Bohemian Club plays as well. This March 21 production of “Twelve Angry Men” at the Bohemian Club’s Union Square-adjacent San Francisco clubhouse was directed—or in the club’s parlance, “sired”—by Bob Kroninger (b. 1923–2015), an important Bay Area lawyer, superior court judge, and author. True to form, inquiries made to the famously secretive 125-year-old institution requesting information about the exact year that this production took place went unanswered. Acrylic on masonite panel. Artist’s distinctive vertical signature at lower right. In original wood frame that was painted a complementary semi-gloss dark brown more recently. Sight is H 39 in. x W 29 in. Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. In very nice vintage condition. A couple tiny marks on painting, and some barely noticeable instances around edges where paint on frame wasn’t cleanly masked. Slight concave warp to panel near upper center. Additional photos provided upon request.
