Batuan painting evolved in the 1930s after a group of local villagers tested different forms with ink-washed paintings upon black backgrounds. These paintings often reveal Batuan’s cultural life, directly through their elements of line, shape, and tone. Meticulous design, craftsmanship, and strong visual impression are characteristic of the style.
The painting comprise individual shapes which are painted in a precise and systematic manner that does not leave any empty space. The complexity of the paintings is inevitable as each of the strokes, lines, gradations, the characters or the subjects forms a delicate unity that finely balances the figure-filled canvas. Various gradations of colors separate different sections of the painting. The landscape is enticing and endless.

Spanish Colonial Cuzco Painting of Archangel Michael
Located in Pasadena, CA
This is a very good Spanish Colonial, Cuzco School (Cuzqueno) painting of the Archangel Michael. The painting appears to have little or no restorations and, as such, is in remarkable condition. We have chosen to leave that painting as found as the patina highlights the depth and character of the painting.
The Cuzco school is a Peruvian Spanish Colonial religious artistic tradition in which Incan spirituality was incorporated into Catholic iconography. These Peruvian paintings incorporate artistic forms that distinguish Cuzqueno paintings from other Spanish Colonial artistic traditions. The Jesuit order, arriving in the mid-16th century, was the principal Catholic order whose mission it was to convert the Inca to Christianity and introduce Christian iconography and European type painting techniques to the Inca capital of Cuzco.

Chancay Pre-Columbian Painting, Peru, circa 1100-1400 AD, Ex Ferdinand Anton
Located in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Nuevo Leon
Earth tones textile fragment. Puzzle like figures painted above a light pink stripe.
It is a wonder to behold antiquities such as a pre-Columbian textiles, an authentic piece of art that has been preserved for centuries and that survives generation after generation. Textiles are infinitely more delicate than wood, metal, or rock artifacts -- so the existence of these pieces after hundreds and thousands of years is exceptional. These textiles maintain their vibrant colors, natural threads, and their unique, historical designs.
Provenance: This textile comes from the collection Ulrich Hoffmann, Stuttgart and former collection of the archaeologist Ferdinand Anton...

Francois Thango ] Oil on Board Painting, Contempory African Art
By François Thango 1
Located in Buffalo, NY
Francois THANGO
1936-1981
Francois Thango was born in Brazzaville, French Congo, the son of Camerounian and Cabindan parents. He studied under Pierre Lods at the Poto Poto (literally Mangove swamp) School of Art, Brazzaville. In 1958 Lods sent Thango to Brussels to represent the Poto Poto School at the World Trade Fair. The following year he crossed the Congo river to live in Leopoldville (Kinshasa), Congo and joined the artistic community there under the patronage of Maurice Alhadeff. Alhadeff’s support allowed Thango to produce his best work; he also exhibited Thango’s work in New York in 1961 and in Europe through the 1960s.
Thango received a UNICEF prize in Paris and his two-dimensional style with figures outlined in black is instantly recognisable. It is considered to be an important bridge between traditional African artwork...
