About the Item

This is a "remarkable" Indonesian Wayang Kulit painting. The color pallette is fantastic on a deep blue background with touches of beige, green and deep brown. The word or name "Ayu" is visible above one of the male puppet's feet. The appraiser says this may be a nom de plume or nickname of the artist. The frame is made of bamboo wood also in deep brown with a bit of stain or distressing. It is in excellent condition. But it is the blend of colors by the artist that cause this paiting to stand out. The pair of shadow puppets include a man standing and a woman in a seated position. The subject is a traditional form of shadow puppetry that originated in Indonesia and is widely practiced in various Southeast Asian countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia. The term "Wayang" means puppet, while "Kulit" refers to the use of animal skin as the material for the puppets. The stories enacted in Wayang Kulit are often based on ancient epics and legends, with the Ramayana and Mahabharata being among the most commonly performed. These stories typically depict the struggle between good and evil, exploring themes of heroism, morality, and spiritual teachings. This piece was acquired at an auction estate sale in Palos Verdes.
