Antique Quilt "Geese in Flight"

About

"Geese in Flight" antique quilt, New Jersey, circa 1880. It looks simple, but the quilter has carefully arranged her triangles in rows of remarkably harmonious colors and patterns to form an overall, energetic spread that is now as crisp and fresh as it was when it was made. Families took care of their quilts - everyday quilts were used often, and the best were kept for "good" when company came or the Preacher visited. The backing of this quilt (see photo) is a wonderful calico which is of the same color family as one of the stripes repeated throughout the quilt, and it adds extra richness to this fine example of American piecework. This quilt was made by the same quilt maker as the "Log Cabin-Barn Raising" posted on this site.
