Fine American Folk Art Cigar Silk Quilt

About the Item

Silk bands like these were used to wrap bunches of cigars. Beginning in the Victorian period, women saved them in order that they may be pieced together into decorative pillow tops, table covers, and quilts, usually in some variation of the log cabin quilt pattern. Most examples in all forms are various shades of yellow and cheddar. Sometimes black and white stripes are found along with the yellow, along with light pastel blue, pink, and green and, on occasion, crimson red. This is a game table cover. The beautiful design with opposing bars on the diagonal is called pineapple log cabin. It was assembled with the highest quality of workmanship that is seen in such examples, using what is known as "turkey track" stitching, a decorative stitch common in crazy quilts of the same period. The inclusion of powder blue and red bars adds wonderful contrast and visual appeal, but the most dynamic feature is certainly the double-tassel fringe that runs along the perimeter. It was not unusual to add fringe, but the use of two tassels in tandem is unique and the balance here is especially attractive. Larger-sized works such as long shams or table covers are much rarer than their square, pillow-cover-sized counterparts and are invariably more interesting. Entire quilts are rarer still but are almost never encountered. Mounting: The textile has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton, black in color, which was washed to reduce excess dye. And acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. The mount was then placed in a high quality black-painted modern Italian molding. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic. Condition: The textile is remarkably stable and intact. There is only very minor breakdown in the silk fabric. The cigar brands include Blackstone, Broadway, La Flor de Patrick Henry, Sheridan, Havana Londres, Feronia, Marguerite, Electric, Lawrences 103, Little Gold Dust, C.C.S, C.C.A. (the Cigar Makers Co-operative Association), The Doyle, Little Moose, Woodcock, M.C.A., and New Yorks, amongst others.
