Spiderweb Quilt

About the Item

I have delayed posting this quilt because I have been on a search for a name for the pattern. The closest I have come are: The Banner Quilt; A Dainty Quilt and Spiderweb. None seem totally accurate but it is the closest I have come. In spite of its lack of a name, it is beautifully quilted. The stitching is done with feathers throughout. Sewn on the back of the quilt is a label from the Western Pennsylvania Documentation Project indicating this it is entry BVR 0150. The quilt was made circa 1880. It is entirely done with the same solid red fabric. It has been washed in its lifetime. There is a light spot smaller than a pea on an outside border but it isnot at all distracting. The quilt measures 71" x 80".

Several features make this quilt quite unusual. Most obvious is the Orange Peel pattern that is not often seen. It is set within concentric frames that are not one hundred percent consistent in terms of colors but they blend well together. Most unusual is the center applique. This is particularly fine example of a classic Pine Trees (aka Tree of Life) quilt. The stitching is superb with very graceful floral motifs in the four full white off blocks and half wreaths in the partial white areas. It's interesting to see the treatment of the corners of the zig zag border. Two opposing corners match and the other two are each different. The center is interesting in that triangles used throughout the quilt are repeated in red but the greens form diamonds which gives a bold aspect.
