Whimsical Appliqued Table Mat with Animals

About the Item

This appliqued table mat may have been made for a child but it can certainly please any adult. Next to each letter is an animal or vignette whose first letter is shown next to it. For instance, next to the letter C is the cow jumping over the moon. Little Red Riding Hood is next to R. Other animals and vignettes are shown throughout the outer border. It's interesting that the piece has three palm trees, clearly of some significance to the maker. All of the figures are embellished with embroidery and several animals have three dimensional decoration as well. The center has the appliqued initials PWS, probably those of the lucky recipient. Measurements are 41 1/2 x 51 1/2. The background and most of the figures are made of wool with some of cotton and velvet. There are two holes on the back side but no condition flaws to the front. Found in Pennsylvania. Made circa 1880.

Thousand Pyramids quilt with a wonderful border of Lily of the Field ( a pattern not often seen). The triangles are made of a beautiful assortment of mostly printed fabrics from the last quarter of the 19th century. The unusual border pattern as well as the fact that it is done with solid colors make for a strong frame. Condition is excellent. Measurements are 80 inches square.
