About the Item

Halvai Bidjar Palace Size Tribal Rug Nomadic Masterpiece in Navy, Salmon, Beige Colors About this rug: There is nothing like this anywhere in the world. From its size, shape, intricate detail, artistic design, old-world color palette, heft body, gorgeous coarse weave, strong yet floppy feel, Cocoon to Butterfly story-line, and irrefutably tasteful ancient repairs throughout its many, many years of existence - this piece is top-notch. This palace size gem must have taken years to weave and its existence only leads to it having to have been woven for a very wealthy and/or diplomatic family. For pieces of this size to be commissioned out was a serious deal, and hence why this is a serious rug. The stories this piece could tell must be endless. Woven in a small village in the greatest rug-weaving country in the world, it must have traveled to the likes of the Middle East, then Europe, and eventually found its way to the United States. For pieces like this to be in America, there must be a story involved because up until around the 1920-30s America wasn't a huge player in the rug market from a buyer's perspective. It was the royal and aristocratic European and Middle Eastern clients that commissioned and purchased the significant pieces. We were late to the party, and finally, we caught on and some of the beautiful rugs of the world started coming to the large East Coast estates and so on. When this rug came to America, it must have gone to one of these large estates on the coast where high-end art and textiles were starting to get all the attention. This piece embodies village tribal weaving because of how coarse the knots are, yet still keeping the design's clarity and crispness - this is VERY difficult to do. You can easily see the growth of vines throughout the entire piece, with flora, boteh seeds, vines, and roots, and many more village motifs are spontaneously woven throughout. All these roots come to support the mother medallion in the center. This rosey salmon pink was dyed from flowers in the surrounding areas, and the deep midnight indigo/oxford blue was derived from the indigo plant. Soft antique beige very well could be undyed sheep's wool, and the earthy espresso, camel, and chocolate could be natural goat hair, dyed with volcanic ash, nutshells, and/or other miscellaneous spices or minerals in the surrounding areas. Clearly, this was dyed in small batches because you will note the organic and neverending beauty of the abrash and natural color variations from knot to knot throughout the entire piece. This is that natural "marbling" that we are obsessed with in these village pieces. Every ounce of wool and every ounce of color in this piece was 100% and organic. This piece does not have a "twin" or even a second cousin, it is one of one in the world. This is the perfect segway into the Cocoon to Butterfly storyline. You can show this piece to a dozen rug dealers and they wouldn't even know what the hidden motifs in this piece mean - if you look closely, you will see Cocoon motifs hanging off the branches that grow outward throughout the piece, follow the branch a bit and you will see suspended butterfly motifs fluttering int he midnight sky - WOW. I've personally never seen this, let alone in my favorite village that weaves my favorite rugs. These weavers are next level in their imagination and quality - I've seen Butterfly Bidjars before, but never the cocoon - which is a crystal clear representation of the circle of life. You will see in other pieces this idea of the Circle of Life that are woven with a seed motif that grows into a tree that sprawls out touching the Heavenly skys, but never a Cocoon to Butterfly - so incredible. This is what this art tis all about, these pieces were the personal diaries of these weavers and a chance to sit down and manifest their dreams into reality, one tiny knot at a time. Do you have goosebumps yet?!!? Ok, back to the specs; the size is, of course, sobering, to say the least. This massive oversized palatial piece is fit for a king (and very well could have been). Where will it end up? A hotel? A commercial space? A large residential estate? Usually, when we sell these types of pieces, they are curated by a designer or design firm for their client - if this is the case and you are a designer and considering this piece for your commercial client - it is a wonderful piece for high traffic despite its age - these pieces are known to have some of the best and strongest wool in the world. If you are interested and not a designer, then you have a hell of an eye! You are a lover of the old, the character, and history-rich pieces, and see the beauty in these pieces the way the weavers intended. Where ever this masterpiece ends up, we look forward to it continuing its story and adding to yours. Size: ~ 11 x 18 Age: Antique Pile: Low This rug is one-of-a-kind, only one available. Because of the nature and age of these older/antique handmade pieces, irregularities and age-related wear are likely to exist and are not considered defects. This rug is also available with a custom cut pad (sold separately).
