Contemporary Hand-Knotted Wool and Silk Lion Carpet
Located in New York, NY
Hand-knotted in dark gray wool and detailed in pure white silk, this modern Persian carpet measures 8’10” x 12’5” and belongs to the Orley Shabahang Animal Collection. Titled "Lion," this carpet was crafted in the exclusive Meyghan weave. Though this carpet is contemporary and new, the techniques used to weave this carpet are traditional and ancient. Wool, shorn from the Persian fat-tailed sheep, is hand-spun into yarn. This hand-spinning process is imperative. Hand-spinning the wool combines multiple strands of woolen fibers. After spinning, dye-masters then utilize organic matters and dyes to obtain the steel-gray tones within the rug. After the dying process, the yarn must be washed with river water and baked in the sun to set the patina in the wool. Within our contemporary collection, many of our designs embody the spirit of tribal and traditional Persian carpets. Lion is directly inspired by tribal Ghashghai lion carpets...
