Vintage American Hand Hooked Rug in Multicolor Block Pattern in Green, Blue, Red
About the Item
Vintage American hand hooked rug in a stripe pattern handcrafted in the 2nd quarter of the 1900s. The hand hooked rug is in a multicolor block pattern in various brilliant colors. The hooked rugs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are made with recycled old material, often used clothing that had been cut into narrow stripes. The foundation of hooked rugs is generally burlap material which the maker uses the stenciling technique to transfer the pattern into the surface. Once the design has been transferred to burlap, it would then be filled with the recycled material stripes and more recently yarn using the hooking technique. Because of the delicacy in the material and construction of vintage hand hooked rugs, they should be used with care. The use of special design and the brilliant colors makes this truly an artistic piece wonderful to be used as a wall art or displayed on a table.
The tradition of Hooked Rug started in New England. “Hooking” is the term used to describe the technique of hand crafting these rugs started as a hobby for the farmers in the long and dark cold winter nights of North East States in the US in the early 1800s. Hooked rugs were made as functional pieces for the home either as a table decoration or a wall art. Antique Hooked Rugs are a combination of Folk Art Creativity and Simplicity. When it comes to true simplicity and artistic creativity Antique Hooked Rugs have some of the best representations.
