18th Century Folk Art Street Performance Figure

About the Item

18th Century Folk Art Street Performance Figure. An unusual and complete one-off piece of folk art, in the form of a hand carved begging figure. Recently uncovered from a personal collection of well-respected art dealer in Belgium. We have been informed by this collector that this item could well have been a street performance (begging) figure, as when the chain is pulled up and down it resembles a begging motion of sorts. The hands are bound together with what resembles metal shackles. The figure is well dressed in French attire. The fact is, whatever this could be, one thing is for sure, it’s a complete one off with an air of curiosity and very artistic appeal. Dimensions in inches: H 12” x W 5” x D 5” Age: 18th century Origin: France (assume) Condition: Aged This item shows natural wear and aging through use and general decay, with wear and loss in sections as shown in the photos provide, the painted surface shows a natural patination and loss. The wood has worn through decay in areas but has now worm or infestation as this is long gone. We have left it in completely original condition as we feel this is how it should be rather than restored or messed the pulling motion is smooth and firmly in place. Missing its feet which have been broken, this item sits firm. We strongly suggest reviewing all the photos provided as part of this advert and propose questions where sections are unclear to avoid disappointment upon purchase. A direct message usually takes 24 hours to answer. For multiple years we have sold antique items globally, please expect our items to show relevant age and natural wear, Items only restored due to breaks and major loss, and we always stipulate this in our condition report.

A large carved and polychrome painted tobacconist's figure almost certainly 17th or early 18th century For a related example see Edward H. Pinto, Treen and other Wooden Bygones, Bell and Hyman, London 1969. Page 412, plate 436. Originally this may well have been a tobacconist's shop window figure. For a similar, but slightly earlier unpainted example, see Sotheby's, The W. J. Shepherd collection of treen, 30th November 1983, Lot 393, illustrated in Pinto "Wooden Bygones of Smoking and Snuff Taking", plate 1. Carved wooden figures, often painted, were placed outside tobacconist's shops as signs from the 17th century onwards. The earliest of these figures is the 'black boy' or 'blackamoor'. 'At the sign of the black boy' or 'at the sign of the blackamoor' was a popular address for tobacconists since the early 17th century. The 17th century figures...
