Circa 1880 Large Carved Oak Dragon Figurehead Gentleman's Yacht Maritime

A large late 19th century ships figure head in the form of a snarling dragon clutching a corbel. The dragon is carved from a single piece of oak with detachable ears, gesso applied scales, and retains large sections of its original painted finish. The dragon has later been mounted on a ebonised wooden base. The dragon was recently discovered in a orangey on the southwest coast of England where it laid for the best part of 40 years, the owner had previously saved the carving from being burnt. The carving is solid yet shows signs of deterioration from being laid on it back, the piece has also had some minor restoration but remains in very much original untouched condition. A very striking and rare piece of maritime history. 165cm in height base width 60cm depth from tip of tongue to ear 67cm.
