Jerome "Jerry" & Evelyn Ackerman Victorian Shoe Corset Button Hook or Hook & Eye
About the Item
An interesting piece acquired directly from the estate of Jerome and Evelyn Ackerman (please see photo from their home studio wall of the couple working on their pottery early in their careers).
The Ackermans began their career in design primarily in ceramics in the early 1950s. After finishing at Alfred University, Jerome worked at the Jenev Design Studio developing ceramic molds, creating various shapes and working on developing different glazes. Evelyn decorated some pieces. In 1960, the Ackermans put their ceramics aside to run their design company Era Industries which in turn launched their careers. This piece was likely designed and made by Evelyn during this time period.
Their woks have been exhibited in various galleries and museums including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. They are also recipients of the Henry Award from the Museum of California Design (MOCAD), Los Angeles for their contributions to California design.
This piece likely personally belonged to Evelyn and was something she acquired in her travels. The Ackermans had a very vast collection of Knick knacks and worldly objects. Whether or not they used this piece in any of their tapestry works is unknown. A fun piece nevertheless.
Made of brass or bronze. The dragon motif is rather unusual and somewhat rare from what we can gather.
