20th Century Silver Brooch by Matilde Poulat of MATL A large silver repoussé brooch designed by Matilde Poulat and made by Ricardo Salas, her nephew. Matilde Poulat was an influential jewelry designer who opened her Mexico City workshop in the 1930s. The piece is composed of a central medallion depicting a tree of life surmounted by a bird, and surrounded by Pre-Columbian-inspired motifs and drop fringe, one piece of which is missing. Matl, the Aztec word for water, is the name she adopted. This beautiful piece measures 4-1/8 by 3-3/8 inches, weighs 52 grams and was created circa 1965-1975.
