Akan Ceremonial Brass Bronze Lidded Container with Figures Ghana Africa

About the Item

Fine repousse and cut sheet brass or bronze lidded treasure box from the Akan people of Ghana, West Africa, 20th century. Images include human figures, sandals, swords, and animals. These images relate to traditional Akan proverbs and symbolism. Called Forowa, they were used to store valuable items including gold. According to Cole and Ross, production of Forowa ended in the 1930s. Reference: The Arts of Ghana by Herbert M. Cole and Doran H. Ross, 1977, University of California, Los Angeles, pages 64-66. Measures: 9.5 x 7 x 7 inches. In very good condition. The lid fits tight. Verdigris (green patina from age) appears overall.
