An Anthropomorphic Celt Axe God Pendant

About the Item

Central-America, Costa-Rica, Pre-Columbian Jadeite and other greenstones were utilized in a diverse array of items that served as symbols of social and political power. Among the most prevalent forms was the *'axe god'* pendant, which was traditionally worn suspended from a cord around the neck. The term *'axe god'* derives from the pendant's shape, which mirrors that of the traditional stone chopping tool, or axe. In Mesoamerica, such axes, also known as celts, were essential tools for the ancient peoples. The curved lower portion of the pendant specifically represents the characteristic shape of the axe.
