Carved Silk Winding Tool from Laos, Naga Motif, Early-20th Century

Carved silk winding tool from Laos. Naga motif. Early-20th century. Offered by Bruce Hughes. This reeling tool is elaborately and exquisitely hand-carved from a very dense local hardwood in a representation of a Naga, the spirit of the waters and bringer of fertility and abundance. The tool was used to wind cotton or silk into skeins prior to dying and weaving. The piece has suffered some damage - the right ear plum is missing, and the tip of the right eye piece has broken off. Dimensions: 19 inches long by 9.5 inches wide by 18 inches tall.

    Fair. The right ear plume is missing from the piece, and the tip of the right eye piece has broken off. The extending rod on to which the reeling wheel was placed is also missing. .
