Early 20th Century Female Caryatid Stool
About the Item
Supporting the flat, circular seat of this early twentieth-century stool from the Shona culture in Zimbabwe is a figurative sculpture of a sturdy-bodied female. The figure is depicted with raised arms, holding the seat above her and resting it on her head.
The top of the seat is beautifully adorned with fine geometric decorations, in which scorched areas highlight a series of raised patterns. Throughout, the surface of the stool exhibits a lovely scorched, glossy patina.
It is likely that this stool was made for European clientele during the early colonial period in Zimbabwe.
