Late 19th Century/Early 20th Century High-Backed Ethiopian Chair
About the Item
This finely carved, medium-sized chair from the Jinka culture in Ethiopia features an upright back-support with an unusual and attractive cut-out cross decoration.
A series of downward pointing triangular designs filled with striations are located above the cross-shaped cut-out, which are echoed by the triangular shapes that adorn the perimeter of the chair's seat. The well-patinated seat of the chair is supported by three legs - which also display fine decorations.
With its slightly curved back-support, the chair is comfortable to sit on, and throughout, the surface exhibits a beautiful dark, chocolate-like patina.
High-backed wooden chairs figure prominently in the installation of chiefs among different groups in Ethiopia - serving as symbols of rank and entitlement during meetings by the council of elders.
