Ewe Kente
About the Item
This is a fine old piece of Royal Ewe Kente from arpund 1930.
Kente textile is a Royal Textile of the Ewe people of Ghana . This piece would have been worn and cherished by a respected Chief of the Ewe and worn on many ceremonial occassions. The classic Autumnal colours are prestigious colours amongst the Ewe. The Kente is woven in 4 inch strips and sewn together in strips of 21 -24 in number. Individual floating motifs are then sewn onto the piece indicating the owners high status within the group. The subtle colours use are all natural dyes all with relevance to the owners connection to the land and his spiritual essence. The condition of the piece is commensurate with its age and use.
