About the Item

A fine example of a very early 20th century Yoruba Ibeji figure from the South West region of Nigeria. The cult of Ibeji (Twin) goes back hundreds of years with the birth of twins bringing great good fortune to the parents and family. The Ibeji figures are revered in Youruba society and once carved are dressed and fed everyday with prayers and libation offered on a daily basis. The skill of the carver combines life like and exagerated adult features. Many Ibeji are adorned with hand made beadwork. This example has beautifully elongated hands and fingers with the facial.scarification indicating its Royal status. The coiffure shows traces of Reckits blue pigment which has combined with the wood over many decades.
