Fine 1950's Mbuti Bark Cloth With Biomorphic Motifs

About the Item

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the asymmetric, spontaneous and animated patterns of bark cloths made by Mbuti women for dances, festivities and coming-of-age ceremonies reflect and respond to their rainforest surroundings. In doing so, bark clothes visualise Mbuti perceptions of place. The design of this Mbuti bark cloth keeps the eye constantly in motion, following the dynamic, expressionistic and freelance composition interspersed with arrangements of biomorphic motifs, all of which seem to closely relate to the forest. This bark cloth was field collected by two doctors in the 1950's in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and has been in a private German collection until recent times. ‍Estimated Period: 1950's Dimensions of Bark Cloth on Custom-Made Mount - Height: 80.5cm & Width: 47cm
